Start-up Red Gorilla Builds Web-Based Time Tracking and Invoicing Service on BEA WebLogic Server
Hot Business Model of B2B 'Application Syndication' Enables Portals to Offer Red Gorilla's Services Under Their Own Brands
BEA USERS CONFERENCE, SAN FRANCISCO, Calif —February 22, 2000— BEA Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: BEAS), The E-Commerce Transactions Company™, today announced that Red Gorilla, The Application Syndication Company, has built its pure Java, Web-based time tracking and invoicing application for professional consultants on BEA WebLogic Server™. Gorilla Time, launched in early February 2000, is the first time tracking and invoicing offering of its kind, providing access on all three mobile interfaces — Web, phone and Palm™.
Red Gorilla is initially targeting the 28 million legal, creative, and IT consultants, freelancers and small businesses in the U.S. that manage time as a resource, as well as the millions more beyond U.S. borders. Red Gorilla's Gorilla Time offering fills a void for professional consultants, who historically, have spent countless time and paper tracking hours and mailing invoices, or wrestling with spreadsheets, losing otherwise billable time. Now these consultants can ease their record-keeping chores by using a Web browser, personal digital assistant (PDA), or cell phone, anytime and anywhere, to enter their time and expense data, manage their invoices, and, in short, run most aspects of their businesses.
Red Gorilla provides a free Web-based service as well as premium services that are offered to customers primarily through a syndication model. This hot new trend enables portal sites to instantaneously enhance their properties with easily-deployed, high-utility, revenue generating applications.
The application syndication trend is being fueled by the growing acceptance of Extensible Markup Language (XML) as a means for automating the business rules and processes involved in distributing dynamic Internet applications and content. XML is an independent standard, and information stored in this language can be easily read by other systems that need the data to run and track business processes across the Web.
The pureJava architecture, of Red Gorilla's applications, is well suited to handle heavy traffic in XML as well as Extensible Style Sheet Language (XSL). And BEA WebLogic Server, with the most comprehensive implementation of Enterprise Java (J2EE) standards available in an application server, was the natural choice for Java-minded Red Gorilla.
"We needed to be able to scale immediately to hundreds of thousands — potentially millions — of customers. And, having chosen Java and Enterprise JavaBeans (EJB) for our application architecture, we needed an application server that delivers the high performance our e-generation customers expect," said Ariel Kleckner, founder and president of Red Gorilla. "In a world of contending standards, we very much appreciate the rigorous support BEA WebLogic Server provides for the latest EJB spec. The inherent scalability and failover capabilities of the server's clustering support ensures that our service will be available to customers, no matter how many engage it at any moment, from the multiple sites of our numerous partners."
"The e-generation expects that every complex, behind-the-scenes transaction be invisible and lightning fast," said Joe Menard, president of the BEA E-Commerce Server Division. "They demand that Web services be available at all times, without fail, be easy-to-use and perfectly reliable, and be personalized for their particular needs. This is why BEA WebLogic Server was the best solution for Red Gorilla."
BEA WebLogic Server is part of The BEA E-Commerce Transaction Platform™, which provides the foundation for building highly reliable e-commerce systems. In addition to BEA WebLogic Server, BEA WebLogic Enterprise™, and BEA Tuxedo® — e-commerce transaction servers for rapidly building, deploying, and managing e-commerce applications — the BEA E-Commerce Transaction Platform includes: BEA eLink™ for integrating new Web applications in real time with back-office systems and with other businesses across the Web; components that enable business logic to be snapped together into applications within a matter of weeks; and a wide range of education, customer support, and professional services to help small companies and large corporations get e-commerce initiatives off the ground and up on the Web.
